If you live in Massachusetts and want to get started on a tech career through Alternative upskilling paths, these organizations offer free training.
Per Scholas
A national organization. Per Scholas provides skills training and access to employer networks to individuals often excluded from tech careers. Their aim is to increase diversity in technology professions. Their courses are designed with companies and lead to skills that align with internships and entry level positions. Their Boston campus is in Kendall Square.
The Tech Foundry
Tech Foundry wants to address the need for a qualified technology workforce and elevate under-represented groups into sustainable careers in IT. Their free 18 week tech training courses lead to certifications, networking with IT professionals, and help with job placement.
The R3 program was launched when the COVID pandemic shuttered so many businesses and workers needed to be retrained to transition into other fields. It offers scholarships for many Community College programs including:
• Cybersecurity Training Certificate
• Cisco Networking/CompTIA A Plus (IT)
• Google IT Support Specialist
• Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCN)
Not just for tech careers, any resident aged 25 or older can attend Community College for free. This is a great way to get started on college and possibly continue to a 4 year degree.
The city of Boston pays for up to three years of tuition and fees for any Boston resident pursuing an associate degree or an eligible certificate program at a partner college. There are limited times of year to enroll. Participating schools are:
Benjamin Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology
Bunker Hill Community College
Massasoit Community College
MassBay Community College
Roxbury Community College
Urban College of Boston
