When my grandmother moved to assisted living, I wondered “Who will tuck her in at night?” Now I'm in nursing school so I can be that person to take care of someone's loved one.

- Angie, Monty Tech Practical Nursing graduate, class of 2025

When someone you love needs help, it's often a nurse who shows up first with compassion and life-saving skills. Becoming a nurse takes dedication, courage, and brains, and students going to nursing school in Central Mass are stepping up for the challenge.

This campaign raises funds to provide financial aid for students working hard this year to earn a Practical Nursing license in Worcester County.

The road to earning that nursing credential is steep.

For returning adult students who work and also juggle school and household duties. It takes nearly a full year of evening classes and in-clinic rotations to qualify to sit for the national nursing exam.

Did you know?

  • On top of tuition, books, and fees, nursing students must also buy uniforms and insurance (~$500)

  • Commuting to class and clinical assignments plus work adds around $35/week in gas expense

  • Evening childcare for the 41 weeks of class is a huge added expense

  • Practice and study materials for the national nursing license exam cost over $100

It's really alot to carry. After months of stress and study, a student can hit the wall when yet another bill arrives.

"The day I received this award I had been staring at an overdue car payment and my tuition bill, thinking maybe going back to school was a big mistake. I doubted I could keep going. Receiving this support made a huge difference for me."

- Alvin, Monty Tech Practical Nursing graduate, class of 2026

Around 30% of nursing students don't finish.

That's a loss to their professional dreams and finances, and also the communities they were eager to serve. The shortage of qualified nurses means this lost potential impacts all of us.

But there's a way to help!

Boost Fund For Students provides completion awards for enrolled students at the midpoint of schooling. When their stress level is high and funds are running low, our modest grants help students power through a challenging moment and get their second wind to sprint toward the finish line.

Since we began 2 years ago, nearly all awardees beat the odds and made it to graduation!

Since the BFFS grant program started in 2025, nearly all awardees graduated (44 of 46 awardees)

How does a modest grant help so much?

Awardees say:

The Practical Nursing class of 2027 is just starting this journey. Donations to this fundraiser will be pooled to provide midpoint grants for students at Montachusett Regional Vocational and Technical School, continuing our partnership with this amazing program. With enough donations, grants will be extended to additional Practical Nursing programs at area Community Colleges.

100% of donated funds go to students and are not spent on overhead or program expenses.

Every single donation in any amount makes a huge difference to help a student get to graduation and step into a new life as a nurse.
